SEARCH ENGINES AND META SEARCH ENGINES
the advantages of search engines is your time is saved, and you can can get your result very quick. The disadvantages is we are dependent on internet. we don't open the book anymore. book is more accurate than internet.
Meta search and Engine Search
meta search sends user request to several other search engines and/or databases and aggregates the results into a single list or displays them according to their source. Meta search engines enable users to enter search criteria once and access several search engines simultaneously. Meta search engines create what is known as a virtual database. They do not compile a physical database or catalogue of the web. Instead, they take a user's request, pass it to several other heterogeneous databases and then compile the results in a homogeneous manner based on a specific algorithm.
engine search A web search engine is designed to search for information on the world wide web. The search results are generally presented in a list of results and are often called hits. The information may consist of web pages, images, information and other types of files. Some search engines also mine data available in databases or open directories. Unlike Web directories, which are maintained by human editors, search engines operate algorithmically or are a mixture of algorithmic and human input.
Appropriate to use search engine
Search engines use automated software programs knows as spiders or bots to survey the Web and build their databases. Web documents are retrieved by these programs and analyzed. Data collected from each web page are then added to the search engine index. When you enter a query at a search engine site, your input is checked against the search engine's index of all the web pages it has analyzed. The best urls are then returned to you as hits, ranked in order with the best results at the top.
Subject directory
tell us what is available by subject and where to find it. Also called Subject Trees, Subject Indexes, Web Catalogues or Web Guides, they provide a hierarchical view of subject categories. Like the subject catalogue in the library, they are usually the work of people, often expert in the subject area, who can evaluate the content of an Internet site and classify it.
Invisible web
Is it some kind of Area 52-ish, X-Files deal that only those with stamped numbers on their foreheads can access? Well, not exactly. The term "invisible web" mainly refers to the vast repository of information that search engines and directories don't have direct access to, like databases. Unlike pages on the visible Web (that is, the Web that you can access from search engines and directories), information in databases is generally inaccessible to the software spiders and crawlers that create search engine indexes.
How to find
Simply think "databases" and keep your eyes open. You can find searchable databases containing invisible web pages in the course of routine searching in most general web directories. Of particular value in academic research are:
- ipl2
- Infomine
Use Google and other search engines to locate searchable databases by searching a subject term and the word "database". If the database uses the word database in its own pages, you are likely to find it in Google. The word "database" is also useful in searching a topic in the Google directories or the Yahoo directories, because they sometimes use the term to describe searchable databases in their listings.
Examples:
plane crash database
languages database
toxic chemicals database
Why are these web is not available in search engine or subject directories?
it is not available simply because it is hidden. most of the file is not ready to access by us. but we can access the hidden files if we how to.
